Joining the Phoenix Crusade
Before you start thinking about how to join the game, take a minute and look at what I am hoping to acheive here. You may save yourself some time and embarrassment.
Game Status
This game is currently Full. If you are still interested, and would like to be placed on a waiting list, please email the Storyteller. Prospective players on a waiting list will be the first ones notified of any openings in the game, and given the first opportunity to apply.
FOCUS
This game will focus on writing skills. As such, it will be an opportunity for the best writers to get a chance to experience adventures old and new with other people who have demonstrated superior writing skills. We will cover everything from the Rite of Passage to the epic that will conclude the story.
PACE
I want to take this game from the days before the main characters have an inkling of what lays beneath the surface of the world they live in. Rather than simply let players create characters and leave the prelude assumed, I want to roleplay the prelude and eventual entry into Garou Society.
The game will progress slowly by most standards, with chapter posts sent out once a week. As the players in this game have been chosen for reliability as well as writing skills, I expect at least a bi-weekly post for the players, although I certainly hope for a weekly response. I won't be an ogre about this, though. Basic Rule of thumb: if you disappear from the game for a month without any sort of contact at all, then I'll take action. Until then, I'm happy to NPC your character.
GOAL
My goal in this is to build together a group of roleplayers who are focussed on the story rather than the rewards -- people who want the opportunity to roleplay some new and interesting experiences more than they want to "win."
I want people who will recognise what is needed when building a pack, and will work together to build a pack, rather than throwing together individual characters. By doing this I hope to be able to focus on both the pack and the individual characters without anyone getting bored.
Before you can join The Phoenix Crusade, you need to do several things.
Create a character.
This must be done using Werewolf: Apocalypse (Second Edition or Revised, I'm not picky) standard character creation rules. For those of you who need reminding, that means 15 freebie points, not 21, and only 7 points of flaws can be taken as extra points. If you want to take more flaws, that's fine, but only 7 points will count towards extra freebies. Your character must be well thought out, not cobbled together because you want to join the game. Take a look at the characters already in the game, and make yours at least as complex, if not more. Your character must start out as a Cub.
If you want some pointers on creating a character, then your best stop is BlackHatMatt's Guide to Better Role-Playing and Storytelling. In particular, check out Breaking the Character Rut by Mercurial, and What Makes a Beautiful Player (both Parts). Beautiful players generally create beautiful characters, and this is your aim if you want in my game.
Another quick note about character histories. A lot of people write histories as a sequence of events. That's not what I'm looking for. As I've told several people: Don't tell me your character's history. Take me there and show me.
Note the characters already in the game. Try to choose a character who would complement the group as it is. Use common sense, as well. Just because the Hammer of Thor is listed in the Get of Fenris Tribebook as a level 5 fetish, and you purchase 5 dots of a fetish background doesn't mean you get to have the Hammer of Thor as a starting character. I won't allow it. As it says in the description of the item, "There are seven of these hammers, and most are in the hands of the Jarls of various powerful septs." There's no way that the Get would allow a Cliath or cub to possess one of them. There would be a challenge for ownership almost every day, and the Cliath would lose, flatly put.
But if you needed to be told that, this this game probably isn't for you.
Send me a sample of your writing. I'm not looking for a novel or even a short story, but it should be long enough that I can get a feel for how well you write. Something I'm looking for are how well you convey your character's emotion and how they interact with other characters. If you're stuck for ideas, then I can send you a sample game post to whcih you can respond, and I'll evaluate that.
Once all this is done, sit back and wait. I'll let you know what happened next.
