Chapter 1: Pieces of the Puzzle
In addition to continuing the tales of Teresa and Butterfly, Chapter 1 introduced several new characters.
B-Ball, freshly arrived at the sept, was descended upon by an elder Uktena, even before his initial instruction could begin.
In Seattle, a junkyard operator named Sweaty John packed up a wolf which he used in illegal dog fights. Although the wolf had beated innumerable opponents before, that night's challenge -- a tenacious pit bull with an iron-locked jaw -- proved nearly too much for him. After a long and vicious struggle, the wolf won, but was wounded to the point where Sweaty John doubted his ability to survive. The junkyard operator bundled the wolf up in a sack, drove him to the docks, and chucked the bag over the edge into the water before driving away.
In the water, the wolf's survival instincts triggered his first change. While a wolf went into the water, it was a gigantic werewolf who emerged near a resting Bone Gnawer. After a brief struggle, the Bone Gnawer established dominance, and took the wolf to the rest of his pack, who were already planning a rescue of their hospitalised and arrested pack alpha.
The alpha wasn't alone in her hospital room. Kate O'Brian, a newly changed werewolf herself, was in the same room, and being held for questioning after a bloodbath resulted from her first change. The werewolves launched an attack, breaking through the hospital wall to liberate the pack alpha and Kate.
Sadly, the relief was short-lived. The pack was pursued out of the hospital, and they only just made their escape through the Gauntlet to the other side. An inexperience and unlucky Kate was trapped within the Gauntlet, and without a Theurge among them, the pack was unable to rescue her.
Traversing the city's umbrascape, the pack led the wolf with them until it was safe to cross over back into the physical world. Upon crossing over, the new werewolf was run over by a car as several teenagers were joyriding through the alleyways. The wolf changed again, and was only just kept from tearing the car apart by the pack, but earned the deed name "Speed Bump" in the process. The pack retreated back to the Sept at which they were nominal members, with Speed Bump in tow.
Back at the Sept, Teresa met Butterfly, and spent the better part of the day becoming acclimated to their new lives. Shape-shifting, hunting, and the heart of the Caern were all on the menu, as was a meeting with some of the other cubs throughout the Sept, Capricorn and Mirrorshy. Speed Bump arrived late in the day, and went straight to sleep.
The next morning, the cubs all met for the first time, before having history lessons with one of the Sept's kinfolk. The cubs learned about the tribes of the Garou, the auspices, and breeds, as well as the cosmology to which the Garou subscribed.
These lessons continue for some time, culminating in the bestowing of spirital Gifts, and Rites for those who wished to learn them.
